Hi! I am the automotive teacher at Helena High School. This is my fourth year here, and my eighth year teaching overall. I love teaching my classes and my goal is to build one of the best automotive programs in the state. Modern cars are fantastic machines, but my passion lies in the classics, back when vehicles had chrome! I’m a sucker for the off brands, with favorites being Hudsons, Volkswagons, Studebakers and Desotos. I think automotive is a great class for every single student; if you are going to drive a vehicle you should at least know something about it! If you have more than a passing interest in cars/trucks, the advanced classes are for you! (you must pass AutoTech 1 first though)
Below you will find a list of the three automotive classes offered. If you click on the link all of the PowerPoints for that class are available so students can see exactly what they missed if they have been absent, or can review material if they need. If you have any questions, either as a parent or a student feel free to email me at email@example.com
Students are introduced to the field of automotive technology. Topics covered in this section include shop safety, tools and equipment, vehicle systems, vehicle maintenance and automotive careers. The method of instruction is mostly lecture/demonstration with shop activities built in as much as possible. The class cumulates with a two week period of shop rotations where students perform oil changes, tire rotations, tire mount and balance, and other vehicle maintenance related activities! This is a great class for every student to take!!
This class is a one period, one semester class that is open to grades 10-12.
Students learn the skills necessary to diagnose and repair small engines, electrical systems, and brakes. Students will also learn basic auto body repair and paint techniques. The method of instruction is mostly lecture/ demonstration/ structured activities. As these are second year students they are allotted a weekly/biweekly open shop time throughout the year, depending on how engaged they stay during shop time.
This class is a one period, full year class open to Juniors or Seniors only with a prerequisite of passing Auto Tech 1 with a C or above.
Auto Tech 3 is where the automotive rock stars are! Students in this class will learn how to diagnose and repair engines, engine performance systems, drive trains and HVAC as well as review material learned in previous classes. Students will continue to learn through lecture, demonstration, and students practice, but students will also work the shop every day, completing objectives as well as doing a large amount of live work. Student projects are welcome with instructor approval.
